This time, the reason you're bad is because of your wrists.

The reason your golf is bad is because of your wrists.

I want to explain how the use of the wrists leads to the use of the arms.

I'll talk about why understanding arm function from the wrists leads to stable direction.

Hearing that title, you probably thought, "No way, I've watched all sorts of golf lesson YouTube videos, but no pro has ever said that."

You thought something like that, right?

And among those watching this video, many probably think, "The way you use your wrists, how you cock them, is pretty much set, right?"

I think many of you believe that.

But unfortunately, simply knowing the common terms like cock, uncock, or hinge isn't enough. If you don't understand the functional relationship between the wrists and the arms, you can't fundamentally improve your golf.

Why is that?

Because how you use your wrists directly and significantly affects the clubface orientation.

That, in turn, also affects how you grip the club.

This means that without knowing the content of this video, your direction...

...will almost never be stable.

Without knowing this, you'll be hitting balls into the woods left and right for the rest of your life.

You've all had this experience, right?

You try your best to square the clubface at impact, but for some reason it doesn't go straight.

It even goes to the right.

Then you try to compensate for that, and this time it goes left.

You've had this experience at least once, right?

By realizing what I'm introducing today, I stopped worrying so much about direction.

My students have also dramatically reduced their stress and worry about direction by learning this mechanism.

If you want to fundamentally understand the mechanism of wrist movement and be able to hit tee shots without worrying about direction...

...If that's what you're thinking, then what I'm about to say today will be quite valuable.

I think the content this time will also be quite surprising, so please be sure to watch until the end.

This time, I want to explain in a bit more detail about the structure and function of the wrists and how they connect to, or lead to, the arms.

First, just to confirm, the terminology is a bit confusing. Bending the wrist outward like this is called dorsiflexion, right?

Bending toward the back of the hand is called dorsiflexion.

Conversely, bending toward the palm is called palmar flexion, right?

The key point is that these are opposite directions.

Dorsiflexion and palmar flexion.

Next, bending upward toward the thumb side is called radial deviation.

And bending downward toward the pinky side is called ulnar deviation.

I'm just mentioning that these are the official names for these movements.

This doesn't mean the joint only bends in four directions; it can rotate 360 degrees, like this, round and round.

We often talk about rotating the wrist like this, and it can basically rotate in a conical shape like this.

The wrist is a complex structure made of many very small bones arranged in a conical shape.

Regarding the structural tendencies of the wrist, there's one absolute must-remember point. I've touched on it before, but looking at dorsiflexion and palmar flexion, they seem like very limited, difficult movements, right?

What this means is that this movement where the thumb side goes up, radial deviation, always—or rather, tends to have an affinity with dorsiflexion.

Dorsiflexion, dorsiflexion means bending towards the back, and dorsiflexion is kind of like a companion to this, you could say.

Well, if you dorsiflex, you tend to also do this back-bending, that's the idea.

And conversely, the flexion that goes towards the pinky side, well, that has an affinity with palmar flexion, you see.

So.

Uh, well, ulnar deviation and dorsiflexion tend to happen together, and, uh, radial deviation and palmar flexion tend to happen together.

And, when you consider the same phenomenon for the left and right hands, they are mirror opposites, right?

So if you grip it like this, you can't make the same phenomenon happen for both left and right, right?

This is a very important premise.

If this matching doesn't work well, it seems like the swing won't work well either, right?

So, uh, what should I do...

Oh, right.

Well, in terms of the relationship with the clubface, the leading edge of the clubface is, well, the image for direction, I think everyone sort of gets that part, but for example, like this to the left, left means this way, right?

And right means this way, right?

And simply, probably everyone simply thinks that if you twist the shaft like this, it will go left or right, but when you're twisting in this simple structure, the times when the face responds readily are, uh, from the earlier companion terms, well, when...

It's actually only when you're flexing and extending, you know.

When you're grounded and extending, if you just rotate the forearm or upper arm around, the face changes quite easily.

Now then, what happens if you extend and dorsiflex?

Just now, when grounded and extending, the face was turning like this, but now, when dorsiflexed and in ulnar deviation, this angle suddenly becomes emphasized, right?

Then, if you rotate the arm, the movement will be different from the earlier movement, right?

Is this hard to understand? I guess it is, huh.

Mm.

Uh, so, in the case of extension and being grounded, in this state, you can control the face movement quite easily by rotating it around and around.

It's like this.

And now, in the case of dorsiflexion and ulnar deviation, it becomes like this, right?

If you rotate this, the movement becomes like this.

If you rotate the arm.

So it becomes this kind of movement.

It completely changes the orientation of the face.

こういうフェースの閉じ開きなのか、こういう閉じ開きなのか、こういう閉じ開きなのか、こういう閉じ開き。

これがスイングに大きく影響しということになります。

で、今左腕のことについてやりましたよね。

一緒なんですけど、ちょっとどういう違いが出るかというと、例えばね、右腕も尺屈掌屈系だとこうなりますよね。

尺屈掌屈系のような状態だったらフェースのローテーションは腕のねじれと、かなり協調性があるという。

こういう感じになりますよね。

で、掌屈背屈系だとこういう感じになりますよね。

ですからこの角度がついてしまうと、結構重々しい動きでフェースローテーションしなければいけないということになります。

So, what changes in terms of the actual phenomenon?

Regarding the face rotation from the earlier dorsiflexion/plantar flexion system, the rotation would be like this.

Because it's this kind of rotation, even if you're a bit late, you can still get the clubface pointing left.

Now, what about in the case of this kind of rotation?

If you're late, if you're late, the clubface stays open, right?

So, you have to time it right here.

You have to time it right here, right here.

Therefore, in this case, you need to wait a bit for the head, for the clubhead and arms to rotate with an angle.

Wait, and then get passed by.

This means you need to swing with this kind of style.

It's not about this being good or bad.

It's that it affects your swing style.

Another thing I must mention is the muscle lines of the arm, how those muscles are attached.

First, I want you to know that if you lean forward a bit and let your arms hang loosely, the arms are normally in a slightly internally rotated state.

Just slightly, so it's normal to see the back of the hand.

And actually, the degree of this varies quite a bit from person to person.

You don't see people with their palms showing.

Not on this side, but there are people who show a lot of the back of their hand, and others who show about half.

So, regarding this tendency, how should I put it... let's abstract it a bit. What I want you to roughly remember is that letting them hang loosely means they're extended.

As you extend, the arm has a muscle line that makes it rotate inward.

It's about the muscles, how they're attached.

When extended, it goes inward.

So, simplifying it a bit, when pulled, it tends to rotate outward.

So, when extended, it rotates inward.

Well, think of a pitcher too. If you throw like this, it becomes like this, I think it's easy to understand. When extended, it rotates inward; when pulled, it tends to rotate outward.

So, for example, for someone who is right-hand dominant, the clubface won't close unless the arm is extended to some degree.

So, I think it's fair to say you have to wait a bit until the arm extends.

And conversely, for someone who is left-side dominant, when pulling, the clubface...

The clubface will naturally tend to close.

Pull.

So, even if you're a bit late, if you exhibit a pulling tendency, the clubface will show a tendency to close.

For the right, if there's a tendency to extend, the clubface will tend to close.

In this way, matching your swing to these naturally occurring phenomena makes the golf swing much easier.

And that's where the connection with the grip comes in.

The grip.

Often, what's called a strong grip is when the palm—no, not the palm—the back of the left hand is seen facing forward to a strong degree.

And holding it from directly the side is called weak, or sometimes a desk or neutral grip.

So, actually, for a person who is the type to pull with the left arm, if they use a strong grip—the type where the back of the hand is seen widely from the start—and they do a pulling-type swing, the clubface...

...will point too far to the left.

So, there's a possibility it will go too far left. Therefore, a swing with a tendency to pull in the downswing with the left arm tends to suit a square grip tendency. As we discussed, for right-side dominance, extending through impact makes the clubface close.

So, in that case, you actually don't manage to fully extend by impact.

With this swing tendency, the body tends to lead, the left arm is extended, and you often end up making impact with the right arm still slightly bent.

So, in this case, you often don't have enough time to fully close the clubface.

Therefore, for this case, a strong grip... well, the left hand is also rotating, and as a parallel to that, having the right hand also in a slightly strong orientation tends to match up well.

I think I'll actually try hitting a ball now.

For the left hand, I'll try a swing that goes from dorsiflexion to... well, a swing that maintains dorsiflexion.

This swing is, so to speak, based on the double pendulum principle.

It's a swing where you swing the clubhead from the hands, right?

So, you could say it's close to a swing where you use the club in a conical shape, pivoting around these wrists.

And, because the movement is based on the double pendulum, the left and right movements...

...are close to being symmetrical.

It's a swing where the left and right shapes look similar, right?

Now, regarding how the right wrist is used, naturally when it swings to this side in the double pendulum motion, the right wrist also dorsiflexes, right?

And on the follow-through side, well, it doesn't quite go into palmar flexion, but... yeah, on the takeback, the right wrist also dorsiflexes—that's the double pendulum.

And on the follow-through, it still somehow...

...has a bit of an image of dorsiflexing, both wrists actually.

So, in this case, I think it's closer to an image where both wrists go from dorsiflexion to... well, maintain dorsiflexion.

So, because it's symmetrical, I think a characteristic of this swing is that it doesn't work if you get lag only on one side.

Okay, let me try hitting one.

This swing is, so to speak, a "laid-off" swing. The head doesn't go to this side, so the path becomes parallel to the target line, or possibly even slightly across it.

Roughly classifying it, this would be a hitting method from the "inside swing, double pendulum" family.

After all, it uses the wrists from dorsiflexion to dorsiflexion.

So, a grip that can guide you into dorsiflexion from the start is more suitable.

Therefore, for the left grip, one where the back of the hand is slightly visible, slightly curved like this—a so-called strong grip—probably has better compatibility.

And also when using the right side...

Since you don't fully extend the right elbow, but still want to get the clubface to square up to catch the ball, the right hand should also be strong, matching the left hand's strong grip.

I think a light strong grip is more suitable in terms of squaring the face.

Now, for the palmar flexion swing... The starting point, as mentioned earlier, isn't to induce dorsiflexion, but to induce palmar flexion into the top of the backswing. So, if the grip is strong, the clubface becomes excessively closed. And anyway, as you go to the top...

...you set it near the shoulder, so a nearly square grip is more suitable, you could say.

And, on the way to the top of the swing, you use the wrists very little.

The arms rotate to reach a laid-off position.

It's a swing where not much pressure is applied toward the thumb.

If anything, you use the right wrist's dorsiflexion, so you catch it there, that's the feeling.

Since you catch it with the right wrist's dorsiflexion, the shaft ends up slightly behind, toward the back—a laid-off position.

So, it becomes a swing where the clubhead, which is behind your back, comes out from behind. Because it's behind the back, this leads to a shallow swing.

Well, this is the part that's close to the so-called "inside swing."

And at impact, uh... with palmar flexion... while maintaining palmar flexion, the movement of the arm's axis and the shaft's axis are nearly in a straight line.

So, even if your timing is late, even if it's late, you can still catch the ball.

Let me try it.

In this swing, the left and right sides are asymmetrical—the takeback on this side and the follow-through on that side.

Because the body's hip turn comes earlier, and the degree to which the clubhead lags behind is stronger.

It's something like this, right?

And, when you dorsiflex, an angle tends to form between the shaft and the arm's axis.

So, just because you rotate your arm, you can't immediately close the face—you can't use it in a way that directly rotates the shaft's axis, right?

Rather, the entire shaft moves significantly.

It becomes that kind of flow.

From dorsiflexion to dorsiflexion.

With this grip state, you can't just rotate the shaft, right?

So, this becomes a flipping-like motion here, and even here, a flipping-like motion—this is sometimes called arm rotation—this being properly incorporated becomes a factor in changing the face's orientation, right?

Let's do a dorsiflexion-type swing.

I'm doing it.

That strong grip means you're already in dorsiflexion from the start—it matches the dorsiflexed state of the left arm.

So, you're bringing the club down while dorsiflexed, but since you don't impact at the moment of fully extending your right arm, a strong grip tends to make it easier to square up at impact.

Therefore, for an outside swing led by the right hand, it's better to use a strong grip and a dorsiflexion-based swing.
